1. Keep your face clean. Whether or not you have acne, it is
important to wash your face twice daily to remove impurities, dead skin cells
and excess oil from the surface of your skin. It is better not to wash more
than twice daily; It can do more harm than good. Use warm, hot, water and light
face cleansers. Using harsh soaps (such as deodorant body soaps) can already
cause inflammation on the skin and cause more irritation.
Avoid harshly scrubbing your skin with a washcloth,
exfoliating gloves, or loofah (thick sponges). Gently wash it with a very soft
cloth or with your hands. Always rinse well, and then dry your face with a
clean towel. (Toss the towel in the laundry hamper, as dirty towels spread
bacteria.) Also, use washcloths only once.
2. Moisturize. Many acne products have skin-drying
ingredients, so always use a moisturizer that reduces dryness and skin peeling.
Look for "nonandogenic" on the label, which means that it should not
cause acne. Oily, dry or combination skin moisturizers.
3. Try an over-the-counter acne product. These acne products
do not require a prescription. Most of them contain ingredients such as benzoyl
peroxide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid or lactic acid, which inhibit bacteria
and dry out your skin. They may cause drying or peeling so start in small
amounts first. You can then adjust how much you use and how often. Another
option is a new OTC topical retinoid gel (Differin 0.1% gel). This actually
works to prevent acne. If you have sensitive skin, use these products with
caution.
4. Use makeup sparingly. During a breakout, avoid wearing
foundation, powder, or blush. If you wear makeup, wash it at the end of the
day. If possible, choose oil-free cosmetics without added dyes and chemicals.
Choose a makeup that is labeled as "nondiogenic", meaning that it
should not cause acne. Please read the ingredients list on the product label
before purchasing.
5. Look at what you apply to your hair. Avoid using
fragrances, oils, pomades or gels on your hair. If they come on your face, they
can block your skin pores and irritate your skin. Use a gentle shampoo and
conditioner. Oily hair can add oil to your face, so wash your hair often,
especially if you are breaking out. Got long hair? Keep it away from your face.
